Abstract

The objective of this research is to study the level of importance and necessity of media Education for raising individual’s and societal awareness in the Kurdistan Region, as well as to determine the role of media Education in providing information and enhancing individual’s understanding regarding the dangers and nature of social media.

The research is a descriptive study, and the researcher employed a survey method in which various aspects of the research topic discussed, analyzed, and necessary observations presented. The research population consists of all media experts within the media departments of universities in the Kurdistan Region (Sulaimani, Salahaddin, Halabja, Sulaimani Polytechnic, Erbil Polytechnic, and Duhok Polytechnic). The research sample is randomly purposive and consists of ten media experts from these departments, who are relevant and specialized in the field of media Education.

Regarding the study conclusions. upon analyzing and interpreting the obtained theoretical and practical data and evaluating them, the research reached several conclusions, the most important of which are summarized in the bellow three points:

1. Media Education is a crucial necessity in the Kurdistan Region due to the emergence of a digital environment, the digital individual, and engagement within the virtual world.


2. The majority of experts agree that through media Education, individuals can be enlightened and made aware of their rights and responsibilities when interacting with social media.


3. Media Education can assist individuals in confronting misinformation and fake news on social media and in recognizing the indicators of fake news.
