Abstract

The main objective and aim of this study, is to identify the role and level of contribution of Kurdish electronic newspapers in Introducing of the crimes of genocide committed against the Yazidis in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It also aims to examine the level of professionalism demonstrated by electronic newspapers in covering the Yazidi genocide and to identify their efforts in shaping public opinion regarding this crime.

This study adopts a descriptive research method and employs a survey questionnaire as its primary data collection tool, distributed electronically via Google Forms. The survey was conducted to explore the perspectives of university professors from the departments of Media, Public Relations, Sociology, Law, Political Science, and International Relations at the University of Sulaimani; the departments of Media, Sociology, Law, Political Science, and International Relations at Salahaddin University–Erbil; the departments of Media Technology, Public Relations, and Marketing at Sulaimani Polytechnic University; and the Media Technology Department at Erbil Polytechnic University. The total number of respondents was (203) university professors.

The most significant findings of the study reveal that the majority of respondents rely on social media platforms as their primary source for increasing awareness and obtaining information about the Yazidi genocide, followed by television, and then Kurdish electronic newspapers. Overall, Kurdish electronic newspapers have published essential information related to the process of genocide against the Yazidis and have shown concern for the crime. However, a large number of these newspapers failed to adequately explain the underlying causes and contexts of the genocide, often limiting their coverage to the transmission of news and information without in-depth analysis of the issue.

Furthermore, the findings indicate that some Kurdish electronic newspapers have become effective tools of mass communication in raising awareness of the Yazidi genocide through the publication of images and videos, particularly by certain outlets. In addition, publishing content in multiple languages has contributed to introducing the Yazidi genocide to the global audience. Some Kurdish electronic newspapers have also succeeded in shaping domestic public opinion regarding the genocide committed against the Yazidis.
