Abstract

Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the fluid pressure inside the eye. Tonometry is the method, eye care professionals, use to determine this. IOP is an important aspect in the evaluation of patients at risk of glaucoma. The purposes of the present study: To study The distribution of intraocular pressure in optometry consultation in Erbil Medical Institute for one year by air-puff NCT. Study was planned to determine the effect of aging on intraocular pressure of an apparently healthy population of Kurdistan. Method: A case control study was conducted on 296 Male and 378 Female subjects of age 7 - 70 years. We compared the level of IOP in all groups of ages and the prevalence of normal and abnormal IOP were recorded. Results: The present study, examined 674 cases there were 296 (43.91%) male and 378 (56.09 %) female. A significant difference in IOP (mean ± standard deviation [SD]) was found between all groups of ages. Mean IOP for group age 1-10 was (13± 1.10) for group age 11-20 was (14.33±1.76), group age 21-30 was (14.19±1.88),

group age 31-40 was (15.50±2.25), group age 41-50 was (15.41±2.71), group age 51-60 was

(17.2±2.35) and group age 61-70 was (18.11±2.45), ( p = 0.005). Eight cases of 674 have glacoma (1.18 %). Conclusion: Mean intraocular pressure increases with increasing age. This study supports the conclusion that as age increases intraocular pressure in the eyes. Knowledge of the normal range of intraocular pressure in various age groups will help glaucoma screeners.
