Abstract

This research treats the nature of the relationship between the gatekeeping theory, information credibility and news quality on social media, this research derived from a master's these entitled: ( The representations of gatekeeping theory in social media from the view point of media masters ), the research focuses on the possibility of continuing the gatekeeper role in the new media and its relationship to the credibility of information and news, then : Who can be able to play the role of gatekeeper on social media?. The researcher used (descriptive and survey method) to studying the subject and reaching results in it, where an opinion survey processed for a sample of (98) specialized academics in media from (21) of Kurdistan region and Iraqi universities, part of answers contains in this research. The research concluded, that the gatekeeping theory continues on social media with a changes. The information and news credibility and quality are low and weak. The laws, editorial boards and the individuals culture, can be appropriate gatekeepers on social media. The role of the gatekeeping is necessary to give higher credibility to the news and information.
